Frequent Asked Questions

SMI Stands for “Snowy Mountains Indepdent”. We are a publishing co-operative based in the Snowy Mountains, in New South Wales, Australia.

No. SMI Operates on a profit sharing basis.

The answer is “that depends”.

The high level breakup of royalties is that 80% of a title’s royalties go to the creators of a title, 10% goes to SMI to cover fixed costs, and 10% goes to the SMI partner sponsoring the title. So If you are an Author and an SMI partner, and you do the vast majority of your own editing cover design, and production, then you’d get 90%. But, if other SMI members help you with those tasks then they will be entitled to a percentage of the title’s royalties, and your royalites will reduce accordingly.

How that breakup is done is up to you and your partner, a typical arrangement is that 50% of the remainder goes to the author and 50% goes to paying down the costs of the other contributors. The important thing is that the arrangement is fair and transparent. That’s what your SMI parther will ensure. But no matter what arrangement is in place, you will have control.

Absolutley!

That is awseome. Discovering and advancing an author’s career is what SMI is all about. The only thing we will ask is that any outstanding development and production costs be returned so that the partners who helped you get your manuscript to market are compensated fairly for the time they spent. If they are on a profit sharing arangment, then SMI will probably need to negotiate a portion of the royalty from your new publishing company. It’s a simiar arrangelement that you would have with an agent.

Your partner can also help with the negotiations. We’ll want to make sure that you know exactly what you’re getting into.
