Submissions

Guidelines

SMI is accepting submissions for books in the following genres.

• Australian Fiction (i.e. general and genre fiction with a strong Australian theme or setting).
• Science Fiction and Fantasy (including Urban Fantasy).
• Mystery/Suspense Thriller.

Note: Memoirs, poetry, romance, historical fiction, and children’s books are not accepted at this time. However these are popular genres, and once a partner with expertiese in these areas joins SMI, we will be accepting them. If you write in one of these genres, then you could be a good candidate for that position. Please see the Partners page for more information about joining SMI.

How to Submit your work

Submissions are only accepted electronically (via email). Any submitted work must be complete (finished) and edited to the highest quality you can achieve.

To submit a manuscript for consideration send an email to editor@smipublications.com and be sure it includes the following:

1. The email must have the word “submission for:” in the subject, followed by the title of the work. This is very important. If you haven’t received a response from us, please check your sent email to ensure the subject contained the word “submission”. Without that word, emails will automatically divert to junk and never be read by an editor. Without this filter our editor would be swamped by junk.

2. Include in the body of the email the following information:
   • The title of the work.
   • The Genre of the work.
   • Whether the work part of a series (or is part of a planned series).
   • Ignoring alphabetisation, what existing book would it sit next to in a book store? i.e. what book is it most like?
   • The approximate length of the work (in words).
   • A short (max 500 word) synopsis of the work. Include themes explored, conflicts, and major characters.
3. Attach the first three chapters of the book to the email as a word document, formatted in manuscript style (double spaced 12 point font).

Once received, your submission will be read within three weeks and you will receive a response within that time.
